Bananas-Superfood

 

Banana is a fruit that is consumed all over the world and the one that I personally consume in the largest amount,  during the day. With all the recent trends in nutrition they might got a bit of bad rap due to their relatively high carbohydrate content.
Well, I hope that after reading this article you will appreciate bananas more, as they are truly superfoods.

Benefits of banana.

Let’s start with the fact that bananas of all kind are a rich source of carotenoids alfa and beta. Contain plenty of phenolic compounds and biogenic amines. These fruits are a great source of minerals such as potassium, calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus. Provide our bodies with phytosterols and linoleic acid, catecholamines, flavonoids, tocopherols, Vit C and have high iron content.

I know there is plenty of different scientifically looking names of different compounds.

Well, here is how they can all positively influence our health.
α &β carotenoids.
This compounds that are found in bananas  are great plant source of pro-vitamin A which is one of the fat soluble vitamins. Among all the benefits of vitamin A, the two most known are that It helps with our vision and is crucial for proper skin functioning. But all this carotenoids are also providing us with good protection from cardiovascular diseases and have anticancerogenic activities. And all that is in bananas.

Phenolic Compounds and biogenic amines

This fancy-sounding substances provided by bananas are responsible for their high antioxidant capacity. In fact, bananas have higher antioxidant activity than some of the berries and have been classified as one of the most antioxidant-rich foods.

What does it mean for us?

Well, it means that they help us to recover quicker after heavy workouts, decreases the risk of multiple diseases and slows down aging processes. All that in bananas.

Pretty cool ha?

Moreover, biogenic amines influence our serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine levels which simply saying makes us happy and relaxed.

Phytosterols and linoleic acid

Some of you may have heard about phytosterols in margarine advertisement. – Margarine is not a good source of them. But bananas are.
How do we benefit from this plant compounds?
They lower our blood cholesterol levels and lower absorption of cholesterol in the intestine which means that they provide us with double protection from high blood cholesterol levels.

What about linoleic acid?

It is one of the essential omega six fatty acids in our diet. We cannot synthesize it, so it must be consumed. I know that recently omega sixes were told to be bad and inflammatory for the human body but it is not true. We need them, but in balance with omega threes.

I think this all is enough to know that bananas are great for health. But for all, you that are not quite convinced yet, here are some more facts about bananas.​

  • Eating bananas lower fasting blood glucose and LDL levels
  • Bananas have been shown to improve absorption of microelements in the intestine
  • Bananas  stimulate the growth of beneficial gut microflora and improve insulin sensitivity
  • Some doctors recommend them to anemic patients due to high iron content
  • They are used in the treatment of diabetes due to their antihyperglycemic effects.

See, bananas are truly superfoods and what is even better is that they can be consumed in so many different ways:

On their own
in oatmeal,
in smoothies,
on toasts

They make everything sweeter!
